Oh Happy Day!

music: Crowded House - Into Temptation

I just wanted to put a note here to wish you all a very happy day! Eat too much, drink too much, stay up too late and kiss people you barely know!

Wait... Disregard that. I think I'm thinking of New Years.

Well, whatever your plans, I'm thinking of you fondly today, and I hope I get to see you soon, because I miss you terribly.

Much love from NYC!

Not My Finest Moment

music: Ella Fitzgerald - Let's Face the Music and Dance

It's the custom here, in the foreign lands of NYC, to carry a ridiculously sized bag around the city, filled with things that one may, for any number of unlikely scenarios, find oneself in need of. These bags are issued to us upon arrival, along with a plastic Statue of Liberty, a bagel, and an intolerance for people who stand in the middle of the sidewalk looking up.

It's also tradition, right before you begin to search for a reasonably-priced chiropractor, to consider cleaning out said bag, and remove any bricks or lead objects that you might have inadvertently picked up in your travels through Chinatown or other fine purveyor of horribly heavy, mostly useless junk.

Tonight was that night for me. Read more...Collapse )

A Conversation in the Car with my Mother

location: Work Sweet Work
mood: amusedamused
music: CNBC talking heads

Jen: I made a cd for us to listen to while we drive!

*Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms” comes on*

Mom: Is this the one where he kills the girl with a rock?

Jen: No, this is the atheist love song. You’re thinking of “Where the Wild Roses Grow”.

Mom: …Oh.

*Johnny Cash’s “The Mercy Seat” comes on*

Mom: What’s this one about?

Jen: I believe it’s about looking forward to dying in the electric chair.

Mom: …Huh. And it’s not a Nick Cage song?

Jen: No. And it’s Cave, with a V. He does a cover of it, though. Do you want to hear it?

Mom: No, that’s ok.

*”Opium Tea” starts playing*

Mom: What’s thi…

Jen, interrupting: Drug use, Mom.

Mom: … Do… do we have any Christmas music?

Jen *flipping through cds*: Would you settle for Irish punk?

Mom: …Yes.

A Bevy of Unrelated Thoughts

Oct. 23rd, 2008 | 10:26 am
location: Work Sweet Work
mood: mischievousmischievous
music: Nick Cave - The Weeping Song

Saturday is only two achingly-long days away now, and I’m preparing myself to suffer the endless indignities of airline travel in order to get 8 bloody nights of Netherworld. It seems like a pretty sweet trade, for all that I despise flying. I haven’t been this excited about Halloween in a very, very long time!

I've been absolutely useless to everyone up here, as I seem to be suffering from a one track mind; a track that does not involve running an office (as this mid-morning post might attest to). My officemates do seem entertained by my (hopefully endearing) child-like excitement for this season, and it’s nice to tell haunted house stories to people that have not heard them 87 times before.

The only thing I’m really not looking forward to is being without my little dragon for a week. I’m leaving him in my wonderful mother’s (who I will also miss) capable hands, and I’m glad they’ll have each other while I’m gallivanting with all sorts of villains and ne’er-do-wells. Still, I’m getting a little mopey over it… Pets are like that, I guess.

The Radiant finale went spectacularly, for all that I shivered uncontrollably for two days. I’m still learning to deal with the cold of the practically-uninhabitable frozen North. The crazies up here assure me that it’s only Autumn, and it gets much, much worse. Also, they refused to let me set anything on fire, including cabin 12, which nobody really uses anyway—a judgment that I thought was a little unfair. Despite all that, we wrapped up the campaign in a nice little bow, and I even got to go to dinner afterward for war stories, which was a rare and unexpected treat. It put us getting home at almost 1am, but it was worth it, and I trudged sleepily to work, content. I just can’t seem to get enough of those marvelous people.

My floon for Pirates is now in full-swing, and I’ve killed many hours shopping for costuming, and writing back-story, and playing with the Pirate Ship Name Generator (The Scurvy Strumpet! No, Poseidon’s Mistress! No no! Neptune’s Bastard!). A word to the wise – Don’t google corsets and chemises at work. I didn’t realize how undeniably inappropriate some of the pictures from my favorite garb sights are… I’ve never closed a window so fast in my life.

In this sentence, I leave a note for myself to tell you all about my first experience with yoga this week, which was… memorable in its oddness.

And finally, I’m going to put up an URL. It’s one that has been a strange addition to my everyday reading, and it never ceases to surprise and disgust me just a little. The website’s members collect and post quotes from extremist’s blogs and forums, giving you one place to read all the craziest sentiments people hold near and dear. I realize it’s not representative of the various religions and groups that they claim to belong to, but it’s still disheartening to think that there are groups that fervently believe these things..

Anyway, check it out for yourself, if you like, at www.fstdt.com .

Soon, Atlanta. Soon!

Did I just get prank called?

Sep. 15th, 2008 | 03:20 pm
location: Work Sweet Work
mood: gigglygiggly
music: Roy Zimmerman - Creation Science 101

I just answered my work line, and what sounded like a middle aged man asked for the accounting department.

I asked him his name... "Howard Gold".

And his company... "Gold and Showers".

Thank goodness for the mute button.

Either he is the subtlest prank caller ever, or he has chosen a very unfortunate business partner.

If he calls back, I'm asking for his business card.
